Sales RecruitmentRecruiting Sales and Business Development professionals has to be one of the most difficult but important things to get right. All companies have something to offer, some excel compared to the competition but if you don’t have the right person to sell those offerings then you’re back to square one.
Senior sales recruitment focuses on four attributes: Sales desire – Does the sales person have the right amount of energy for the role? Sales knowledge - Does the sales person have the right type of sales experience? Product knowledge – Has the candidate worked on similar products or services? Sales ability - Has the sales person showed previous success?
The trap most sales recruitment agencies fall in to is focusing on the ‘product knowledge’ attribute too much, a high performing sales person can succeed with any product or service or managing any team, if they need more training then so be it, a great sales person and motivator is worth the wait.
The most important and transferable of skills is the ‘sales knowledge’ attribute. For instance: Are you looking for a relationship builder or a hunter? A manager or an individual player? It is up to your recruitment agency to then make the match.
We are not pretending that it’s easy or always wise to take on sales people from another industry but it is worth while being more open to interviewing candidates that sit slightly outside of the box. After all the pressure is on the recruitment agency to not waist your time and make sure everyone you see has what it takes, sometimes a CV can not get that across.
